Hulunbuir City is located in the northeastern part of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It gets its name from Lake Hulun and Lake Buir. Serving as a northern border gateway at the junction of China, Russia and Mongolia, it covers a total area of 253,000 square kilometers. Home to Hulunbuir Grassland, one of the world’s four major grasslands and the lushest grassland in China, the city is traversed by the Greater Khingan Range in its central area, forming a distinctive landscape pattern of “agriculture in the east, animal husbandry in the west and forests in the middle”. Wetlands including the Ergun Wetland and Lake Hulun are scattered across the land like stars.

Between 20,000 and 30,000 years ago, the Zhalainuoer people lived here. Nomadic tribes including the Donghu, Xianbei and Mongolians rose successively, fostering profound grassland civilization and diverse ethnic cultures. Port cities such as Manzhouli embody the charm of cultural integration among China, Russia and Mongolia. In summer, boundless green grass stretches far and wide with flocks and herds roaming the land; in winter, vast snow blankets forests and wilderness. It is a world-famous destination for eco-tourism and folk custom experience.
